Kidnappers Release Bayelsa SSG’s Mother After 33 Days

The abducted 80-year-old mother of the Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government, Madam Betinah Benson, has regained her freedom after spending 33 days in her abductors’ custody.

It was learnt that the octogenarian was brought to her residence in Yenagoa on Sunday, where she was whisked away on July 20 by gunmen dressed in military camouflage.

Details of Madam Benson’s release were scanty, and it could not be ascertained if ransom was paid to secure her release or arrest made by the police.

Recall that on August 5, the bandits had reportedly contacted the victim’s family and demanded N500m ransom to set her free.

The SSG, Mr Konbowei Benson, confirmed his mother’s release in his Facebook page on Sunday.

He said, “Thanks to the Almighty God, my sweet mother is back to Yenagoa.”

It was the second time in nine years the mother of the former Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly would be kidnapped.

In January 2013, a gang of gunmen abducted Benson’s mum from her residence in their village, Korokorosei, in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesman for the State Police Command, Mr Asinim Butswat confirmed the release of the SSG’s mother.

He said, “Yes, she was rescued this (Sunday) evening. I am awaiting details from the team.”
