Thousands of commuters were stranded at various bus stops in Lagos on Tuesday when operators of Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) and Lagos State Bus Services (LBS) withdrew their services from the roads.
The development followed the killing of a BRT passenger, Miss Oluwabamise Ayanwole, 22, on February 26 after she boarded the LBS bus at Chevron Bus Stop, Lekki, en route Oshodi around 7 pm.
Commuters, who went out to the various BRT bus stops on Tuesday morning, were disappointed none of the buses operated by Primero and Lagos State Government worked.
The development led to an increase in transport fare to various destinations.
For instance, a trip from Ikorodu to Oshodi and Lagos went up to N500 and N800 from N300 and N500 respectively by Tata and Red buses operators.
A source at Ikorodu depot of Primero Transport Services said the measure was taken to prevent Lagosians, angered by the killing of Oluwabamise on board LBS bus, from venting their anger on the buses.
The killing of Miss Oluwabamise inside a BRT bus raised a lot of concerns amongst Lagosians, who said, on various social media platforms that Bamise had expressed fears over the conduct of the driver of the LBS bus before she went off the radar and subsequently declared missing.
Oluwabamise’s whereabout was finally unraveled by residents around Ebute Ero on Lagos Island, who said she was tossed out of a BRT bus half-naked and with her private parts allegedly missing.
Police spokesman Adekunle Ajisebutu said Bamise’s body was found on Carter Bridge by Ogogoro community, Lagos Island.
Ajisebutu confirmed on Monday the BRT driver Nice Andrew Omininikoron, had been arrested.
Omininikoron, 47, was arrested at his hiding place at Ososa, Ogun State by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), Police Commissioner Abiodun Alabi said on Monday night.
