Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, Takes Strong Action Following Gruesome Killing of Woman, Orders Police Investigation and Arrest of Perpetrators
Governor Otu of Cross River State has directed the police to thoroughly investigate and apprehend those responsible for the horrifying death of Madam Martina Okey Itagbor. The elderly woman was allegedly beaten and burned alive by a group of youths in the community of Old Netim, Akamkpa local government area. The incident took place on June 18, 2023, at around 7 am.
The suspects, who remain at large, had accused Madam Martina of causing illness to a young person in the community. Governor Otu, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Emmanuel Ogbeche, condemned the incident as abhorrent and an act of sheer cowardice. He emphasized that his administration would not tolerate such inhumane behavior from any individual or group.
Governor Otu stressed that Cross River State, like the rest of Nigeria, operates under constitutional order, and therefore, all forms of lawlessness and criminal acts will be met with the full force of the law. He instructed the Commissioner of Police to mobilize all necessary resources to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous act are swiftly brought to justice.
The governor called on community leaders, religious institutions, and civil society organizations to actively engage in civic education, promoting tolerance and respect for constituted authority, particularly among the youth. He warned against taking the law into one’s own hands and emphasized that anyone found doing so would face legal consequences.
Governor Otu expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and the affected community. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to the People’s First Agenda and maintaining peace, security, and the reputation of the state.
