The Delta State Government has issued a notice to owners of buildings and structures situated on natural drainage and waterways, urging them to evacuate the premises promptly, or else these structures will face imminent demolition.
Frank Omare, the Director to the State Government on Special Duties, led a sensitization campaign in Warri South and Uvwie councils, emphasizing that no illegal structure would be spared, regardless of the owner’s status or influence in society.
The government’s objective is to facilitate the smooth flow of water through proper channels and mitigate the occurrence of flooding and its detrimental impacts.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori conducted an inspection tour of waterways and drainage systems in Warri and surrounding areas three weeks ago, identifying illegal structures obstructing water flow.
During a recent sensitization tour, the Special Duties Director issued a final warning and notification to building owners situated on drainage channels, advising them to vacate the premises before the impending demolition exercise.
Structures obstructing waterways were identified and marked for demolition during this exercise, as the government aims to eliminate blocked canals filled with refuse, thereby promoting environmental restoration throughout the state.
Some residents expressed support for the government’s initiative, hoping that it would effectively address the longstanding issue of flooding in the area.
The Delta State Government is resolute in its determination to take necessary actions to reduce the incidence of flooding and safeguard the environment and the well-being of its residents. No exceptions will be made, as the government is committed to restoring a free and unobstructed water flow system.
